Joshua Fredric Smith from Los Angeles embodies Hasya (Mirth) rasa in DAM 999 by playing an Anglo-Indian character Capt. Fredric Brown who inherits a legendary political legacy but became a mariner by choice.

DAM 999 is an emotional thriller movie that highlights Navarasa in a different way of approach by portraying 9 emotions through 9 characters. Joshua enlivens mirth through his character, having a poetic love affair that crosses barriers of religion and ethnicity when he marries to Raziya, his Pakisthani lover.

“My Character is a caring fun filled fellow with sarcasm at his side. He enjoys the lighter sides of life and his friends. But one thing I like about him the most is that he is Transparent. I’m sure the audience will really see he is much more than just a Mariner and a Captain”, Joshua says about his character in the movie.

Being to India for the first time, he was in a feel of being at the other end of world.

“It was amazing experience to be a part of another culture. I've made friends for life over in India and that is a wonderful feeling, Vinay, one of my co-stars is someone I can consider a close friend. Truly I was blessed with a talented group of award winners to work on DAM 999” he says.

It was a peculiar stage for him to learn a different kind of acting experience with the talented cast and crew from different corners of world.

The movie is directed by a Hollywood certified NRI Director Sohan Roy and is produced by BizTV Network. It is expected to be released worldwide by the end of December 2010.

Prognosticators have always made everyone curious and the latest was Paul Octopus – a two year old Octopus who predicted Fifa World Cup 2010 winners. He predicted the winners in each game and when Andres Iniesta won the one and only goal for Spain, his final prediction also came true, exciting every one. He has predicted the victory of Spain on the last day by picking a mussel from a glass box decorated with Spanish National flag. Paul Octopus is currently live in Oberhausen Sea Life Aquarium of Germany. Sohan Roy the director of DAM 999 Movie was inspired by Paul Octopus and its predictions before, and that has leaded him to introduce a new character Octopian Boy in his movie. With some myths and horoscope predictions in the movie this Octopian Boy also plays a lead role.

As every foot ball lovers turned to Paul Octopus during Fifa World Cup 2010, children worldwide will be gazing at this Octopian Boy by the release of DAM 999. Now its time to take a deep breathe for the whole team of DAM 999 movie. They are waiting for nature to shower her blessings as rain, so that the cameras can roll down.

DAM 999, the Hollywood movie directed by Sohan Roy, CEO of Aries Group of Companies completed its shooting at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. Film City witnessed the climax scenes of the movie. The expensive set build by veteran art Director Padmasree Thota Tharani had even captured the attention of Ramoji, the founder of this gigantic film complex. Director Sohan Roy with the cast and crew is now back in Kerala waiting for the monsoons to capture a couple of sequences left in the script.

DAM 999, a movie portraying 9 moods, 9 characters and a dam of emotions will be screened in the film festivals this October and will be released world wide by December 2010. The Director has shared his thought about his next movie based on terrorism.

Padma Shri Thota Tharani, the set designer and art director of the Hollywood movie DAM 999 has bagged the National Award for the best art direction three times. The sets of DAM 999, a movie from the marine world directed by Sohan Roy conquered the minds of several people by this time.

Thota Tharani started his career at the age of 12 by helping his father in set designing. As a set designer and art director, he has completed more than 100 feature films including foreign productions. The set designing of films like Bombay, Kanthaswamy, Anveshana, Mudhalvan, Kadhalan made him an eminent personality in the film industry.

Thota Tharani won the National Awards for the movies Nayagan(1989), Indian(1997), Sivaji: The Boss(2007). In the year 2001 this prominent personality was awarded with Padma Shri. Apart from being a set designer he has also worked as production designer and in the art department for various movies.

What made you take up DAM 999?

After APF, I was waiting for a challenging movie, DAM 999 was exactly what I wanted, I found it unique and very interesting. The movie revolves around an outdated Dam outlined with a classic emotional thriller biased with the concept of Navarasa.

About your character in DAM 999?

My character’s name is Raziya. She is one among the lead characters in the movie. Raziya depicts Shringara (love) rasa in the movie with green as the color denoting the emotion.

Your perspective after reading the script of DAM 999?

DAM 999, has lot to share with its audience. I was amazed to know that each character portrays a Rasa in the movie, and we definitely can’t leave the fact it conveys a message to the world regarding the consequences of outdated dams.

DAM 999 is the directorial debut of Sohan Roy, a veteran mariner and the CEO of Aries Group of Companies, Dubai. The project is initiated by BizTV network along with Marine BizTV. The movie portrays on screen 9 characters, 9 moods and a dam of emotions. DAM 999 intends to imprint the Vedic concepts of Navarasas and Navagrahas along with the magical curing power of Ayurveda through its characters and situations of thus classic love story.

DAM 999 is an emotional thriller and an ingenious attempt to highlight the unseen beauty of the maritime world in the backdrop of rich Indian culture while telling a compelling story in the backdrop of maritime life and an old dilapidated dam. The story was inspired by the collapse of Banqiao dam in China, 1975, which led to the collapse of 61 reservoirs, killing 2,00,000 people.

The cast and crew include sixteen National Award winners. Alleppey, the backwater city witnessed the shooting for the initial part of the movie. People were attracted by the beautiful sets set up in Mohamma, Alleppey. Now the whole crew is busy packing up to move on to the next location. The movie is expected to reach its audience by the end of this year.

Dam 999 In Soup Again

Dam 999 seems to be followed by trouble. The film, directed by an NRI director, has been having issues for a while now.

Malayalam actor Thilakan, who was supposed to be a part of Dam 999, was made to drop out of it due to his battle with AMMA. However the problem seemed solved when he was replaced by Rajat Kapoor and Thilakan was paid seven lakhs as compensation. Now, the film has hit a standstill again. Actress Tulip Joshi, who was to play the female lead in the movie, walked out of the sets due to some differences between her and the unit. When she decided to come back, members of the FEFKA refused to work with her.

Looks like Dam 999's problems are far from over, doesn't it?

DAM 999 an International Movie by the Mariners, directed by Sohan Roy, has started shooting at Alleppey. An emotional thriller, the film is based on the ancient concept of `navarasas’ or the nine human expressions, represented by an assortment of actors from India and Hollywood. Movie also portrays the concepts of Ayurveda as well as lost love in the backdrop of a sound story of a dilapidated colonial dam.

Director's Note

Dam 999 is an emotional thriller. It is inspired by many real life incidents. Through this film I want to convey the psychological stress every individual experiences by restricting one’s feelings and desires. One cannot go on for long without expressing one’s feelings. Like a pressure mounted DAM, concealed emotions will explode at some point of time. Words are not enough to convey the aftermaths of this outburst. The audience will relate to the symbolic representation of a DAM across everyone’s mind. In a very simple way, Dam 999 is a story of nine characters and their emotions. The lives of all the nine characters revolve around the central edifice, the pressure mounted DAM.
